The series begins with a 'spatial quake' devastating Eurasia, causing 150 million casualties. Thirty years later, high school student Shido Itsuka encounters a Spirit girl at a quake's epicenter and learns from his adoptive sister Kotori that Spirits cause these quakes when they manifest. Kotori commands the airship Fraxinus for the organization Ratatoskr, which recruits Shido to seal Spirits' powers by making each fall in love and kiss him. The Anti-Spirit Team (AST) and DEM Industries oppose this, seeking to eliminate or exploit Spirits.
