Blue SWAT (ブルースワット, Burū Suwatto) is a Japanese television series, the thirteenth entry in the Metal Hero Series franchise. It broadcast from January 30, 1994 to February 26, 1995, totaling 52 episodes (including a special episode that aired after the main run) plus a theatrical film that debuted as part of the 1994 Toei Super Hero Fair. Unlike earlier Metal Hero shows, Blue SWAT adopted a grounded tone, emphasizing martial arts and gunplay rather than flashy, fantastical action. This realistic mood appealed to older viewers and adult fans of the genre, but it failed to attract a young audience, prompting a shift to a lighter tone partway through the run. The plot begins with Earth weakened by crime, pollution, and war, leaving humanity vulnerable to an alien invasion. The Space Mafia, a group of extraterrestrials, exploits this chaos by possessing humans to achieve their goals. In response, the Japanese government creates an elite police unit called Blue SWAT. However, an alien possesses the unit’s chief, infiltrates the organization, destroys their headquarters, and kills all members except three: Sho, Sara, and Sig. These survivors keep their suits and gear, then establish a private detective agency named Blue Research to continue fighting the Space Mafia on their own.
The main characters include Sho Narumi, a hot-shot mercenary in metallic blue armor with blue patches, officer number 153, who often acts independently and goofs off. He is an aspiring Olympic triathlete and later receives the DrumGunner from Gold-Platinum, upgrading to Hyper Sho. Sara Misugi, the no-nonsense second-in-command, wears metallic purple armor with red patches, officer number 077. A former L.A.P.D. officer, she still grieves her lost partner, keeps Sho in line, and is highly skilled in combat. Sig, the leader, wears gunmetal-grey armor with yellow patches, ID number 011, and is a calm, intelligent telepath. After a battle reveals his green blood, he admits he is an alien from a planet destroyed by the Space Mafia, part of the Space S.W.A.T.
